How can I get Line manager to update in a status table using rule.

Hi Expert ,

Workflow is getting triggered using custom report by HR and workitem will be triggered to employee(1st level)  for approval and 2nd level workflow is getting approved by LM using Rule 168.

Now status table will be updated (Pending with LM) in between 1st and 2nd level. i am not able to achieve due to rule. Any suggesion using rule?
